BIOL108 Lecture 2: Cells to Tissues
Document Summary
6th march 2018: lecture five cells to tissues: cell junctions (joining cells together): These junctions can be tight or loose. Connected to fibres that comprise the cytoskeleton. Seal two cells together so liquid cannot move through the space between the cells: desmosomes: Join cells together but allow flexibility and a gap between cells. Attached to intermediate filaments that traverse the cell (made of the protein keratin: gap junctions: Create a channel between cells so that molecules can pass quickly from one cell to another: types of tissues: Epithelial surfaces exposed to internal fluids or the environment. They cover body surfaces and line the body cavities. Muscular help move parts of the body by contraction and relaxation. Nervous relay information about conditions within and outside the body. Connective bind other tissues together and have roles in protecting, strengthening and supporting these tissues: epithelial tissue: Nose, mouth, esophagus, anal canal and vagina.
