BIOL108 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Myelin, Neuroglia, Corpus Callosum
Document Summary
22nd march 2018: lecture 12 nerve senses. Q1: schwann cells: insulate axons with a myelin sheath, can be black or white, supply growth factors to nerve cells, synthesise neurotransmitters, clean up cellular debris. Q2: the structure that connects, and enhances communication between the two hemispheres of the brain is called the: hypothalamus, spinal cord, corpus callosum, synapse, cerebellum, the nervous system: Composed of neurons and neuroglial cells that help the neuron function. Neurons detect external stimuli and induce muscles and glands to make appropriate responses. Consist of dendrites (tree like structures) that send signals towards the cell body and axons that carry signals away. Axon are insulated by myelin sheath formed by. When dendrites are stimulated, this triggers an action potential sending an electrical charge down the axon to the next neuron. Nerves transmit signals by nerve impulse, which are electrochemical changes that move down axons.
