Acquired dyslexia - a reading impairment developed as a result of brain damage. Developmental dyslexia - a reading impairment in a person (usually a child) who never had normal levels of reading. 10-15% of children: diagnosis needs to eliminate the option that the child was never exposed to a learning environment - no child can read without learning. Reading comprehension: on a bellcurve model a person diagnosed with dyslexia would have low level performance in one or multiple reading comprehension tests, some of these people will be instructional casualties & with help they will learn. Definitions: regular words: can be pronounced using phonic rules. ex. Cat, help: irregular words: can be pronounced using word recognition ex. Yacht, quay: nonsense words: can be pronounced using phonics rules ex. Recognises words based on shapes eg. mcdonalds they cannot read the word. Yellow = a word with two sticks in in, could confuse with follow because it also has two sticks.
