Lecture 11: Emotion Regulation and Reflecting Feelings
Emotion Regulation
We receive little training in how to manage and feed back emotions
“The processes by which individuals influence which emotions they have,
when they have them and how they experience and express these emotions”
(Gross, 1998)
Can be automatic or controlled
Can be conscious or unconscious
Can be effective at various points in the emotion generative process
Model of emotion generation - Gross (1998)
Emotional response tendencies
o Behavioural (e.g. flight or fight what we do in response)
o Experiential (e.g. the experience of being angry)
o Physiological
We have particular emotional cues, this influences the emotional response that
you have
We evaluate our emotional responses (judgements) and modulate/change the
way we react to the emotion
Family of origin
Our family of origin plays an important role in the development of emotion
regulation
Individuals often repeat the patterns of childhood
May be helpful or not so helpful
Parents model emotions to child, can influence emotion regulation via good
parenting (parents are sensitive, pick up emotional cues and reflect them back)
How to people deal with emotions?
Lack of emotional awareness ‘what emotion? I’m totally fine’
Lack of emotional clarity ‘I’m not upset! I just have a headache’
Difficulties controlling impulses ‘you are a …!’ yelling, throwing things etc.
Extreme distress and escalation ‘It hurts too much, I can’t stand this, I will
never stop crying’
Difficulties engaging in goal directed behaviour when distressed ‘I can’t
focus! I couldn’t make it to uni today’
Avoidance of emotion ‘where is that glass of wine? I’m too busy to think
about it’
Non-acceptance of emotions ‘I feel guilty for feeling this way. I shouldn’t be
angry’
Overanalysing and problem solving ‘What are all the reasons I feel this
way? What are all the solutions to my problems?’
Common themes:
Emotions judged as right or wrong
Idea that emotions are awful, bad and we cannot stand them
We need to get rid of unpleasant emotions in some way
