EDUC105 Lecture 1: What is Educational Psychology?
Educational psychology: application of scientific method to the study of behaviour
of teachers and students in instructional settings
→ A branch of psychology concerned with studying how people learn and the
implications for teaching
• Distinct branch of psychology
• Has its o research methods, theories, problems and techniques
• Applies methods and theories of psychology
• Its ee aroud for more than over a century
• Research takes thought and time, and is very expensive
o Research = look at the results, valid research, link theory with
• Summaries of theories and research conducted in classroom etc:
http://scopus.com
• Autism = percentage growing out of it by behavioural interventions?
• Research on brain development through advanced computer technology (i.e.
M‘Is, iagig et.)
• Self perception issues → differences (female and male adolescents)
Critical Thinking regarding research results
• Critical reflection: analysing what we are thinking and learning by
questioning assumptions, perspectives and values related to our thoughts or
to new information
• How was the study conducted?
• How many participants?
• Qualitative data? (recorded interview, recorded video, observational note-
taking)
• Or Quantitative data? (written test/survey, numerical analysis)
• Replication
• Meta Analysis – collecting same evidence and joining together
• Peer reviewed research only
• Mentors → expert practitioners who take on a responsibility to share their
skills/experiences with a novice to help them to develop professional
expertise
Different Types of Research Methods:
• Correlation studies
o Positive (two factors increase or decrease together) and negative (one
factor increases as the other decreases) correlation
o Correlations do not prove the cause and effect
▪ E.g. smoking and lung disease = 0.80 correlation (strong)
▪ Good nutrition and better health = 0.70 (strong)
▪ Jogging and weight loss = 0.30 (low to moderate)
▪ Height and languages spoken = 0.0 (none)
