Document Summary

Lecture 3. 2 vertebral column 2: clinical applications. Examples: osteoarthritis and osteoporosis (thinning and reducing in volume of number of trabeculae within a bone -> more susceptible to fracture) Early stages: smooth surface becomes roughened - receives more load than expecting -> thickens (sclerosis) Advanced stages: full thickness defects in cartilage -> decreases ability to absorb + dissipate forces: osteophyte: projection of new bone in the margins of a joint (form as a result of excessive load) End-stage: lost almost all of cartilage - bone on bone, polishing each surface: all of force going through joint is now onto the sclerotic subchondral bone -> start forming cysts (fluid is better absorber of excessive force) Mesenchymal tissue converges to form a compact centre of cells. Tissue condense further in chondrification centres areas that start forming cartilage. 2 centra become vertebral body: neural arch on either side eventually form lamina. Primary ossification: template which is cartilage, starts forming bone.
