Expelling co2 makes ph increase cos less h ions. Hb also acts as buffer when binds to h. Chloride shift allows bicarb ion to go into plasma. Can"t just wait till drop in o2 or rise in co2. Need to anticipate it so use the medullary respiratory center and pre-botzinger complex. When close to death, animals can have quite irregular breaths. Hyperventilation- blow off co2 but then don"t feel like need to breathe. Less activity of brainstem areas and o2 drops but not breathing so can collapse. If breathing helium can get rid of co2 as well. If drop in ph, can stimulate breathing to remove co2 and balance ph. Could be caused by choking, blockage in lungs, co2 problems. Due to level of co2, things will occur from central (small changes) High levels of co2 depress the brain and medullary center so can become unconscious. If loss of consciousness before medullary center is started.
