Need to depolarize membrane to get closer to threshold (receptor) Varies through the body eg. teeth and muzzle have small but back is larger. Have gated proteins in membrane that are light sensitive which change flow of sodium with stimulus to get closer to action potential. Open sodium gates too eg. ear for hearing/balance. Afferent nerves connected to every part of body that help us know where the parts of. If semi-circular canals aren"t working, there may be head tilt but can stand and move. Proprioception our body are positioned with this as well as knowing with pressure on feet telling that down is there. Cutaneous input- like looking at the horizon. Can feel nauseous if too many messages like when on a rollercoaster. Pain if above 42 (trpv1)- birds don"t have this, also triggered by spicy food (chemical) If around 28 on skin thermoregulation starts (cmr1)
