BIOL10002: Lecture 7 - Mitochondria, chloroplasts,
endosymbiosis
Mitochondria
-“power plant of the cell”
-Cells may contain several of there of have a single, large mitochondrion
-Has 2 membranes — outer membrane & inner membrane (inward projections called
cristae
-Carry out aerobic respiration of all eukaryotic cells
-Glossary:
Space between inner & outer membrane - proton filled intermembrane
compartment
Matrix: space enclosed by the inner membrane
Cristae: Inward projections of inner membrane
-Electron transport chain & turbine ATPase of inner mbembrae same as plasma
membrane of bacteria
-Circular DNA chromosome mitochondria
Smaller than circular DNA of bacteria
-Ribosomes (small, sensitive to chloramphenicol etc)
Ribosomes in mitochondria significantly smaller than regular ribosomes in the
rest of the cell
-Divide by binary fission (FtsZ protein)
FtsZ used in both bacteria and mitochondria for division
Bacteria have membrane folds like mitochondria
** Similarity to bacteria starts to suggest that mitochondria is related to a bacteria

Document Summary

Cells may contain several of there of have a single, large mitochondrion. Has 2 membranes outer membrane & inner membrane (inward projections called cristae. Carry out aerobic respiration of all eukaryotic cells. Glossary: space between inner & outer membrane - proton lled intermembrane compartment, matrix: space enclosed by the inner membrane, cristae: inward projections of inner membrane. Electron transport chain & turbine atpase of inner mbembrae same as plasma membrane of bacteria. Circular dna chromosome mitochondria: smaller than circular dna of bacteria. Ribosomes (small, sensitive to chloramphenicol etc: ribosomes in mitochondria signi cantly smaller than regular ribosomes in the rest of the cell. Divide by binary ssion (ftsz protein: ftsz used in both bacteria and mitochondria for division, bacteria have membrane folds like mitochondria. ** similarity to bacteria starts to suggest that mitochondria is related to a bacteria. Mitochondria originated from symboptoc aerobic bacteria (alpha-purple) Chloroplasts believe\d to be derived from symbiotic, photosynthetic bacteria (cyanobacteria)
