Lecture 15: Diseases of the Cardiovascular system
Arteries &Arterioles
-Carries pressure blood away from heart — withstand high
-AORTA: expands during contraction phase pro cardiac cycle and contracts elastically
between contractions (Windkessel effect)
Reduce pressure fluctuations between beats
Propel blood into aorta & prevent back flow
-Arteries & Arterioles: Adjust diameter (resistance flow) to change amount of blood
flowing through them
Pressure absorbed by the elastic recoil
-Structure (Refer to lecture notes)
Tunica Intima (endothelium, Internal elastic lamina)
Smooth muscle
External elastic lamina
- endothelium produces factors that cause smooth muscle to perform vasoconstriction &
vasodilation
Veins
-Drain blood form capillary beds under very low pressure
-Venues & veins — capacitance vessels — ability to stretch and store blood
-2/3 blood volume found in veins
-Structure
Valves (prevent back flow)
Internal elastic lamina & endothelium (tunica lamina)
Smooth muscle
Loose connective tissue (No external elastic lamina)

Document Summary

Carries pressure blood away from heart withstand high. Aorta: expands during contraction phase pro cardiac cycle and contracts elastically between contractions (windkessel effect: reduce pressure uctuations between beats, propel blood into aorta & prevent back ow. Arteries & arterioles: adjust diameter (resistance ow) to change amount of blood. Owing through them: pressure absorbed by the elastic recoil. Structure (refer to lecture notes: tunica intima (endothelium, internal elastic lamina, smooth muscle, external elastic lamina. Endothelium produces factors that cause smooth muscle to perform vasoconstriction & vasodilation. Drain blood form capillary beds under very low pressure. Venues & veins capacitance vessels ability to stretch and store blood. Structure: valves (prevent back ow, internal elastic lamina & endothelium (tunica lamina, smooth muscle, loose connective tissue (no external elastic lamina) Venous return: gravity effects venous return, larger veins have string ome smooth muscle which contracts to assist venous return, deep vein thrombosis. Formation of blood clot in a deep vein.
