Lecture 17:
Basic nerve function
-All cells have a res4ting membrane potential
-Activation of cells caused by depolarization
-Inhibition of cells caused by hyperpolarisation
KEYWORDS: action potential: way of electrical charge change
Heart
-Autorhythmicity
-Gap jucntion
-Pacemaker cells: Cardiac muscle cells but don't contraction (polarisation &
depolarization causes charge that results in the contraction of other cardiac muscles)
-SIOATRIAL NODE (dictates the rate at which your heart is contracting)
SAN (Spontaneoues rhythmic depolarization) works at approximately 100
times per minute. Heart stops working if it’s not at 37%
Atrial synctitium
-ATRIOVENTRICULAR NODE(AVN) is connected to bundles of non-contractile fibers
APs sent to the ventricles via the bundle of His
Run fro ventricular apex etc.
-Cardiac Arrest: Sudden loss of cardiac function when the heart abruptly stops beating
Ventricular fibrillation : Caused by irregular electrical activity in the heart
(arrythmia)
Treatment: Defibrillator — uses electricity to shock the heart to try and restore
its regular rhythm
-Frequent occurence: implantable cardiac defibrillator

Document Summary

All cells have a res4ting membrane potential. Keywords: action potential: way of electrical charge change. Pacemaker cells: cardiac muscle cells but don"t contraction (polarisation & depolarization causes charge that results in the contraction of other cardiac muscles) Sioatrial node (dictates the rate at which your heart is contracting: san (spontaneoues rhythmic depolarization) works at approximately 100 times per minute. Heart stops working if it"s not at 37: atrial synctitium. Atrioventricular node(avn) is connected to bundles of non-contractile bers: aps sent to the ventricles via the bundle of his, run fro ventricular apex etc. Nor: in the system all the time. Gives you wakefulness and readiness for activities. regulation of all daily activities. Rise in ght or ight response: causes the activation of neurons. Diastolic part of cycle is twice as long as systolic, therefore we calculate weighted average. Change in blood pressure: rapid response (baroreceptors, baroreceptor re ex, autonomic nervous system.
