BIOM20002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Biceps, Triceps Brachii Muscle, Sliding Filament Theory
Document Summary
Eccentric contraction: load exceeds force, load is not supported, muscle lengthens. More realistic situations muscles in opposing groups. In eccentric muscles, an antagonist muscle can act as a load pulling the muscle down and elongating it. Even b looks bigger and stronger, we don"t know how many motor units are recruited. Muscles always have some level of tone. i. e. always being stimulated somewhat. But we don"t know how many motor units are being recruited. Look at the picture like an arm where on is the biceps the other is the triceps. When we move our arm we stimulate both but if we want to contract our arm then obviously w activate the biceps more. When it contracts in 1 second it contracts over the length of 4 sarcomeres. However b will contract one sarcomere length in 1 second. All the sarcomeres exert force on what we"re trying to move. A has higher velocity, b has higher force.
