Document Summary

Characterised by the shaft between proximal and distal ends. Small amount of motion working together which could change the shape. Sesamoid bone air filled, surrounding nose which help take air in, then air pass through and get warm before arriving at the lungs. Keep the weight of the skull light - evolutionary advantage. Tendons working on bony elements which has lots of actions, having these bones aligned can smoothen the action (pull) of tendons against their destination points (because of the smooth gliding of the tendon) Covered by periosteum; periosteum has an outer, tough fibrous layer and an inner osteogenic layer; the outer hard protective shell. An internally scaffold-like arrangement where they are oriented along lines of stress and provide the bone with great strength; absent from the central medullary cavity of a long bone (which in life is filled with marrow) Additional bones in the body not everyone has them. Cells: osteoblasts producing bones, osteoclasts dissolving bones.
