Document Summary

Left lung is smaller and lighter due to heart. Liver pushes on right dome of diaphragm which pushes right lung up making it shorter and wider. Apex (top of lung, points to cervical inlet) and base (contacts diaphragm) On left lung there is a cardiac notch. Inferior to this is a tongue like process called a lingula. Mediastinal or medial: side lung root is on. Posterior: not just a line but a whole section/band that runs down. When lung inflates posteriorly it rubs against vertebral column and paravertebral gutter (adjacent to vertebral column on each side). Inferior lobe is posterior against back of thoracic cavity. However number of lobes and fissures can vary. The pulmonary arteries and veins are responsible for oxygenation in the lung. Pulmonary arteries and veins don"t provide blood supply to lung. The bronchial arteries and veins are responsible for the vascular supply of the lungs. Present in lung root but small and difficult to see.
