BIOM20002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 69: Ovulation, Nuclear Fusion, Reproductive Health
Document Summary
Endometrium must be vascular and secretory enough to provide nutrients and o2. Boundaries break down blood vessels and becomes placenta. Environmental disturbances interfere with implantation (if endometrium not right, exposed to environmental factors) Most susceptible to teratogens that can cause major malformation. All major organ systems present at end of this period. Maternal health and welbeing should occur in weeks 3-5. Women might only find out they"re pregnant in week 6. Problems in this period gives physiological defects and minor morphological abnormalities. Many womn don"t know they"re pregnant till week 6. Maternal under nutrition: reduces fetal nutrition and growth restriction. Oxygenation: low o2 to fetus (at altitude) or cardiorespiratory problems. Smoking: reduce blood flow to placenta and has teratogens. Alcohol: baby"s liver not developed enough to break down alcohol. However diverts blood to muscles away from placenta. Contraception choice changes over time for your reproductive health. Suppresses ovulation and doesn"t allow sufficient development of endometrium.
