Weight loss improves features of the metabolic syndrome. Treatment of mild to moderate obesity with laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding or an intensive medical program: a randomized trial. Very low calorie diet (for rapid weight loss) optifast (novartis) diet. Orlistat (roche): pill that causes fat malabsorption to encourage patients to avoid eating fat or they"ll get steatorrhea. Surgical program: placement of adjustable gastric lap-band system (allergan health) Surgical group and medical treatment group had same weight loss over first 6 months. But then medical group started to regain fat. 38% of each group had metabolic syndrome as defined by atp ii criteria. 2 years later more people in medical group still had metabolic syndrome i. e. if you lose weight then metabolic syndrome gets corrected. So to avoid the metabolic syndrome it is necessary to avoid becoming obese. Common sense tells us obesity is caused by eating too much and not exercising enough.
