Document Summary

Aw = active wake qw = quiet wake. Sws = slow wave sleep = nrem sleep. Fragmented sleep pattern: keep switching from sleep to awake and arousal rate is enormous. Reduced deep sleep (stages 3&4): insomniacs don"t have stage 4 deep sleep, and hardly stage 3. Early, more frequent rem phases: sleep onset rem = go into rem very quickly. So want to get rid of night time arousal and get more stage 4. All these areas stimulated by orexin during wake. If you can dampen this stimulation you may cause sleep in insomiacs. Figure 3 | interactions of orexin neurons with other brain regions implicated in sleep and wakefulness. Orexin neurons in the lateral hypothalamic area (lha) and posterior hypothalamus (ph) are anatomically well placed to provide a link between the limbic system, systems involved in energy homeostasis and monoaminergic and cholinergic neurons in the brain stem. Solid arrows show excitatory projections, and broken lines inhibitory ones.
