Lecture 27 hiv prevention (cont. ) and cure. Two large phase iii studies using the ring monthly: aspire, 26000 participants, 56% reduction in new infections, the ring study, 1959 participants, 31% reduction. Both studies showed poor effect in young women (18-21) most likely due to compliance issues. This is due to langerhan/dentritic cells in the foreskin of the penis, so when foreskin is retracted during intercourse, exposes mucosal layer which is perfect entry for hiv. Art > prep for msm > prep for heterosexual couples > circumcision > hiv vaccine. Only hiv vaccine study has quite low effica(cid:272)y (cid:271)ut it"s a (cid:271)egi(cid:374)(cid:374)i(cid:374)g for further studies (cid:271)e(cid:272)ause only way to effectively and cheaply combat hiv is with a vaccine.
