The manual lists what it terms mental disorders . The dsm does not identify causes of disorders (etiologies) but only describes symptoms of these disorders. It broadly defines mental disorder as : clinically significant disturbance in an individual"s cognition, emotion regulation or behaviour usually associated with significant distress or disability in social, occupational or other important activities . For each of the 300 disorders there is a list of symptoms or behaviour in which clinicians could look for in the patient in order to diagnose them.
