Goals of a classification system: communication: among clinicians, between science and practice, clinical: facilitate identification treatment, and prevention of mental disorders, research: test treatment efficacy and understand etiology, education: teach psychopathology. Information management: measure and pay for care (funds and resource distribution, etc) The fifth edition of the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (the dsm-5) is used as the current authoritative listing of mental disorders. The manual lists what it terms mental disorders . The dsm does not identify causes of disorders (etiologies) but only describes symptoms of these disorders. It broadly defines mental disorder as : clinically significant disturbance in an individual"s cognition, emotion regulation or behaviour usually associated with significant distress or disability in social, occupational or other important activities . For each of the 300 disorders there is a list of symptoms or behaviour in which clinicians could look for in the patient in order to diagnose them.
