Describe the functions of the coroner under the coroners act 2008 (vic, identify and differentiate between a "reportable death" and "reviewable death, describe the responsibilities of the health professional in relation to coroners. Inquest (hearing) only if public health and safety is at stake. Most likely place nurses and midwives will go if caught up in issues in legal system. Heard by a coroner to determine how death occurred. Coroner writes a finding, but no one is a winner" or loser". Reportable deaths whether a public health or safety concern and if action is required to prevent similar cases: unexpected, unnatural, accidental, violent, mental health. Reviewable death: death of a second or subsequent child of deceased parents. Must respond to coroner within 3 months. Coroners can make recommendations to make laws eg. codeine over the counter, life jackets on boats. Coroners must have a law degree and 5 years of practice experience.
