PSY4111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Habituation, Zygote, Prenatal Development
Document Summary
This is the development that happens between conception and birth. It begins in the fallopian tube when sperm penetrates the egg and forms a zygote. Overall takes around 266 days for the one celled zygote to become a foetus of 200 billion cells. Conception through implantation, which is the first 14 days. Zygote travels towards the uterus, divides and forms a blastocyst of 16 to 64 cells. The blastocyst implants in the uterine wall, with layers of cells which differentiate to become different parts of the body. A period of rapid growth and refinement of the organ and brain systems. At 6 months the foetus can respond to light, and is able to hear sound. 7 months begins to gain fat just beneath the skin. Any disease, drug or environmental agent that can harm a developing embryo or foetus. Effects depend on the timing, dose and duration of exposure.
