PSY2061 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Lateral Geniculate Nucleus, Superior Colliculus
WeeK 5
Part 2
Tectopulvinar pathway
•Retina > Superior colliculus > pulvinar > V2 > other cortical areas
•10% of neurones in optic nerve
•Rapid reorientation, attentional capture
•Most input from M-cells > sensitive to motion
•Superior colliculus also projects directly to eye muscles:!
- realigns focus onto fovea!
- detailed analysis via geniculostriate pathway
Lateral geniculate nucleus
•Magnocellular (M) layer!
- big cell bodies: bottom two layers of LGN!
- particularly responsive to movement!
- input primarily rods!
•Parvocellular (P) layers!
- small cell bodies!
- top four layers of LGN!
- colour detail!
- still or slow objects!
-input primarily cones
