PSY2071 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Language Development, Information Processing, Language Acquisition
Week 2
Part 3
Piaget’s stages of Development
Sensimotor Period
1. Simple reflexes 1st month
2. First habits/primary circular reactions 1-4 month
3. Secondary CIrcular reactions 4-8 months
4. Coordination of Secondary Circular reactions 8-12
5. Tertiary circular reactions 12-18
6. Beginnings of thought 18-2 years
Information processing
-encoding > storage > retrieval
-automatisation is the degree to which an activity requires attention
-memory capabilities in infancy examined through kicking research:!
- kicking research demonstrated increase with age in memory capacities!
- infants who have learned the association between a moving mobile and kicking
showed surprising recall ability when they were exposed to a reminder
Developmental Scales
-Designed to distinguish between normally developing (typical) and atypically babies
-Earliest scales by Gesell (based on observing many babies) either developmentally
delayed or advanced
Developmental quotient (DQ) - an overall developmental score to quantify level of
functioning in different domains!
-motor
-language
-adaptive behaviour
-personal-social domains
Other approaches used to detect differences in intelligence in infancy:
-Bayley Scales of infant development, focuses of cognition, language and motor abilities!
-Visual-recognition memory measurement: (Measures of visual- recognition memory, the
memory and recognition of a stimulus that has been seen)
Document Summary
Sensimotor period: simple re exes 1st month, first habits/primary circular reactions 1-4 month, secondary circular reactions 4-8 months, coordination of secondary circular reactions 8-12, tertiary circular reactions 12-18, beginnings of thought 18-2 years. Automatisation is the degree to which an activity requires attention. Memory capabilities in infancy examined through kicking research: Kicking research demonstrated increase with age in memory capacities. Infants who have learned the association between a moving mobile and kicking showed surprising recall ability when they were exposed to a reminder. Designed to distinguish between normally developing (typical) and atypically babies. Earliest scales by gesell (based on observing many babies) either developmentally delayed or advanced. Developmental quotient (dq) - an overall developmental score to quantify level of functioning in different domains. Other approaches used to detect differences in intelligence in infancy: Bayley scales of infant development, focuses of cognition, language and motor abilities.
