What it means to be a professional –
- Professionals are; o Trustworthy
o Receive the public’s trust in them o Commit time and effort to
their work o Do more than is asked o Have high ethical
standards
o Maintain confidentiality
What are roles?
- A set of behaviours that have some socially agreed upon function and
for which there is an accepted code of norms
- Role taking vs. Role taking o Taking – all roles are prescribed &
defined by a specific set of rules to which everyone will conform
o Making – roles are created, moulded and modified by
individuals, according to their own interpretation

1. Occupational Therapy Perspective –
- ‘Community of Practice’ shapes occupational therapy roles. It
o Establishes and maintains the body of knowledge – which is
knowledge distinctive of itself, and the members are able to
practice competently, autonomously and with accountability
as well as develop the knowledge base
o Outlines the occupational therapy perspective by expressing
its philosophy and values
