Week 12 – Cultural Events and Festivals
Define the different categories of cultural events and festivals
• Cultural events and festivals:
o Major sectors of events industry
o Key drivers of the tourism and service economies of developed economies and most
countries of the world
o Are diverse in nature
o Celebrate identity and nationality
o Includes religious, seasonal and community social events
• Festivals:
o Describe a broad range of event forms
o Include short celebrations of a particular place or culture
o Can incorporate themes
o They are celebratory, commemorative or ritualistic events
o Help understand (through a carnival-esque experience) how society manages itself and it
governed
• Conceptual Definition – provides a framework for identifying cultural events
o Two categories of cultural events (Anthropological vs. aesthetic culture)
o Acknowledges the diversity of culture as a concept
o Relates to the association of cultural events with expressions of culture
• Operational Definition (for managers/planners) - Captures both the anthropological and aesthetic
components of culture. Cultural events are thus defined as those that:
o either present a particular expression of culture (events that have cultural meanings in both
aesthetics and symbolic representation) [Specific symbolic item/aspect]
o Or aim to represent the cultural expressions of a specific group (thus includes capturing the
aesthetic components & symbolic representation of culture by a specific group) [Specific
group & general/overall expression]
• Types of Cultural Events and Festivals
o Music events and festivals
o Film festivals and events
o Community festivals and events
o Arts events and festivals
o Literary events and festivals
Identify and explore the key management issues for these types of events
• Managing problems of congestion and overcrowding as festivals become popular over the years
• Local tourism finding difficulty to meet this highly seasonal demand for accommodation, transport
and hospitality
• Attracting the attention of global media has meant the festival’s prominence has also attracted big
brand names and global brands
• Local people feel excluded from this global media event
• The emphasis is seen as being on tending to the interests of tourists and sponsors
• Festivals moving away from its cultural tradition as new groups attending barely participate in the
festival (spring break attendees to parade for the partying with no interests in the festival)
• Environmental factors – form the practical horizons of what organisers can actually programme
within a venue or festival
o Macro-level – from external environment such as PESTLE
o Micro-level – internal to the organisation (Strengths & Weaknesses – available resources)
