Why do we pray?
- We pray to keep our balance
- To keep our focus firmly on God

Prayer
- Jesus prayed with others and he prayed on his own

Prayer: The gift of being able to talk with God
- Prayer needs to be a regular feature of daily school life.
- Religious Education needs to complement this catechesis by deepening students’ knowledge
and understanding of Christian Prayer.
- Prayer needs to reflect the:
o distinctive Christian relationship with God, received from Christ through Baptism
o attitudes and prayer of Jesus, the Son of God.
How do we pray?
- We can pray in many different ways.
- In communal prayer, it is useful to follow the suggested model:
- Gather Focus Reflect Respond
- This reminds us of the need to have a beginning and an ending, the inclusion of sacred texts
and the active participation of all present.
o Gather bringing the people together to pray a greeting and a gathering prayer,
song or music
o Focus telling the people about the theme of the prayer and introducing the reading
or text
o Reflect remembering experiences of life that relate to the theme praying for the
intentions of the people gathered
o Respond a prayer, song or music that reminds people to take the message received
today to the wider community.
Prayers in the Units of Work
- Children’s Liturgy of the Word
- Guided Meditation
- Lectio Divina
- Traditional Prayers: Angelus, Rosary
o Teach students what they are actually praying for/about when they say the words to
the traditional prayers
- Prayer using the Arts: Mandala, Symbols, Drama

- The raising of one’s mind and heart to God
