ED2623 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Speed Bump, Peripheral Vision, Problem Solving
Health and Physical Education - Tutorial 6 - Week 6
How to Write a Template
Name of Game: Traffic Lights
Section: Listening game and group organisation
Fundamental Movement Skill Focus: Running, Skipping, dodging - none for this example
Year group appropriate for - kindy (red, amber, green) to year 6 (adding freeway, accidents and
roundabouts) - K-6
Number of players - team based or whole class? Whole class
Equipment or space - no equipment for this activity - younger years perhaps cardboard traffic lights -
amount of space needed to visualise - full or half court?
Diagram - clear boundary, can out cones in the corer - how will the game be set out (beginning of game)
and where will teacher/s stand
TP - stands for Teachers position - where are you, as a teacher, going to stand? and where are you not
going to stand (can get hit and cant see what is going on)
Key - 1 page key at the beginning of Games file (BE CONSISTENT)
x = student
^ = a cone
O = a hoop
TP = Teacher’s Position
Instructions - enough detail to read it and teach it or for someone else to understand the activity
- Set boundaries and ask class to find a space inside
- Explain what red, amber and green means to students (Basic steps)
- Move around the area when i say green, jog on the spot when i say amber, and stop when i say red
Variations for the game?
Easier or harder
cater for different student’s needs?
- freeway - faster
- Detour - change direction
- Carpool - partner up
- Speed bump - jump and carry on
- Tunnel
- Car Crash
- Roundabout
- Type of movement (fundamental movement skill)
Change size of boundaries to make it harder or easier
Include a ball - soccer, hockey, basketball
Safety points
- peripheral vision
- look out for each other when they are moving
Cats and pigeons - early childhood version - 1 cat and 1 piegons
cat chases pigeon - pigeon can go into any nest by tapping the person in the circle (nest)
the pigeon who got tagged needs to then move out of the nest and move to another without getting
tagged by the cat
- Problem solving
Sharks and islands - older years - less hoops and more sharks
