Document Summary
We are constantly under attack from a variety of pathogens. Most commonly from bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. However, mostly we remain in good health and we manage to fight these off. Microorganisms have lived in the earth way longer than we have. The majority of organisms are microbial in nature. In order to survive, animals developed mechanisms to compete against microorganisms and limit damage caused by them. The main system that has the ability to respond to infection. It allows the immune system to move around and protect the body. Interstitial fluid (lymph when in the lymphatic system) Recaptures the fluid and delivers it back into the venous system. Transports foreign substances and immune cells from the tissue spaces to organised lymphoid tissues and organs. There is inter-mesh connection between the lymphatic capillaries and blood vessels. As fluid is lost by the capillaries, it could be reabsorbed back by the lymphatic capillaries.
