Document Summary

Is the awareness of internal and external stimuli, which fluctuates continuously on different levels. Extent of alteration of consciousness when induced by hypnosis, or relaxation. Measures the electrical brain activity over time. Different patterns occur depending on different consciousness. Variation is consciousness can be driven by biological rhythms such as sleep, due to physiological functioning. These are classified by the frequency of occurrence. Ultradian; >once per day (such as digestion) Circannual:= once per year (such as bird migration) 24 hour biological cycle that regulates bodily processes such as alertness and sleepiness. Regulated by the scn (suprachiasmatic nuclei), which interacts with the pineal gland and the release of melatonin. During the day the scn becomes acting and reduces the glans release of melatonin, which increases body temperature and alertness. Scn stops inhibiting this and creases relation, sleepiness and decreased body temperature. Mismatch of internal circadian clock and external time. Causes sleepiness at night and day and impaired concentration.
