Reality principle : gratification of wishes delayed aif threatened self preservation of individual, internalised, identification with parents. Emerges from ego 2-5 years of age. Repression force unpleasant thought from awareness. Projection attribute own thoughts to another. Displacement divert feelings from source to another figure. Reaction formation behave in a way opposite to how feel. Behaviourism and social learning patterns of thinking and behaving.
