History of padding
2 types of canoes:
• C-Boat (Canadian canoe)
• K-Boat (kyak)
Canadian canoe
• Used to be made from tree trunks
• Birch bark, melted sap used to sap waterproof
• North Americans Indians created it
• Traded in fur skins and the like
Fur trade - the canoes fur traders used were capable of carrying a crew up to 12 people and a cargo
weighing around 2400 kilograms.
Voyageurs
• A group of men paddlers who ended their trip in 1953
• Paddled major distances and rivers/lakes that were unexplored
K-boat (kyak)
• Kyak= mans boat or hunters boat
• At least 4,000 years old
• 2 types of basic kayaks- one was built with light driftwood while the other was made by
stretching animal skins over frames made of whalebone.
• Varied in shape, size and design according to owners
• Materials used to make kyaks have changed overtime ( skin, fiberglass, plastic)
• Polynesians designed the voyaging canoe
Aboriginal bark canoes
• Used for transport
• Fires would be lit to keep occupants warm and food
Tasmanian bark canoe
• Combination of bark or reed bundles
Aboriginal dugout canoes
What are the specific benefits of paddling as a way of journeying?
• Stress relief
• Multi tasking aka paddling/fishing
• Efficient way of travelling
• Physical exercise
• Solo experience
• A part of nature cycle
