Narcotics (heroin, methadone: 60-80% born addicted, breathing/swallowing coordination, normal dvlmntal progress by age 2, boys remain vulnerable. Cocaine: miscarriage, premature birth, sleep disturbances, very irritable, poorer language dvlpmnt skills, negative effects also due to lower iq, maternal vocab, home env, exposure to additional teratogens. Pregnant woman"s diet total weight gain: 25-35 lbs. Psy250(2: result may be increased susceptibility to diseases in adulthood, exp: diabetes. Prevention of birth defects: 95% newborns: normal, many of remaining 5% have minor congenital problems temporary/correctable, each pregnancy is diff, depends on genetic makeup & prenatal env. Birth & the perinatal env: perinatal env: env surrounding birth, meds given to mom during delivery, delivery practices, social env shortly after baby is born. Psy250(3: some meds used by 95% moms, reduce pain, induce contractions, relax mom, can reduce ability to push effectively, can make babies lethargic & inattentive.
