BIOL1008 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Brown Earth, Ponytail, Vibhuti
Document Summary
It was dilini"s first multicultural night at waverly high. The concept of multicultural night seemed unfamiliar to this young immigrant. Back in india, culture was not something to be confined to one specific day of the year. It was the smell of dosai and chutney at 6:30 am. It was the sacred maadu" or cow, plodding casually across the highway during peak hour traffic. It was the hazy outline of a soaring ancient temple amongst the dusky afternoon skyline. She missed the strangely comforting chaos and imperfections of her home land. There were no golden beaches to sunbake on. In fact, on a hot day, the umbrellas would be up to provide shade from the blistering hot sun. However, dilini enjoyed walking barefoot on the bare reddish brown earth, her feet sinking gently into the ground with each step as the soil would almost embrace her back. Here, the picture perfect and lush rich green lawns were a disappointment.
