The months after they needed to figure out what shape their state governments would take. War taught people that they no longer needed to show deference to their superiors, or those in charge. May 1776, congress recommended that each state elect their own government. Agreed their order should be written out in constitutions. When parliament claimed rights over the states, there were no documents on either side to prove who owned them. Therefore patriots wanted to limit government tyranny in the future. Who were people- women, children and black people couldn"t vote. Popular democrat position: didn"t want government intervention, protection of the people through legal documents. Your vote couldn"t be bought so you had to show you had property and had money. Wanted to abolish this: more representatives to the legislature, as close to a real democracy as possible. Esp. given that before the revolution english politicians filled positions with their friends: didn"t want a bicameral system.
