In 1800s the categories or disciplines which today are standard did not exist as concepts and were not the basis of differentiated groups and researchers. Debates betwee the so-called nomothetic and idiographic knowledge, between the possibility and impossibility of generalisations about human behaviour, between the universalizes and the particularizers. Were assigned the departments of economics, sociology and political science. However there were dissidents in each disciplinary structure. This crude picture has to be qualified by taking into account regional variation. The germans chafed at british definations of social knowledge and gave birth to an uncertain cross-breed. Some french chafed at the failure of other researchers and created the annales school.
