The set of all points in the plane corresponds to the set of all vector whose tail is at the
origin O
o [4,2], [-1,4]
o Points correspond to OA, OB
Vectors of the form OA are called
(position) vectors and are said to be
standard form
The set of all vectors in the plane is
denoted 2
Notation
(Row) vectors are denoted using square brackets
We also often denote vectors in columns and call them (column) vectors
The coordinates of a vector are called its components
o Vectors are equal if and only if their
components are equal
There is a special vector called the zero
vectors
o [0,0], 0
We usually denote this vector by 0
Vectors in the plane are considered floating,
and are completely determined by their
length and direction not their position
1.2 Vector Algebra
Given u = [u1, u2], v = [v1,v2], the sum of u and v is the vector u + v = [u1+v1, u2+v2]
We sum vectors geometrically with the head-to-tail rule:
Parallelogram rule:
