The term 'globalisation' encompasses a relatively new phenomenon of
increasing interdependence between and across nation states, whether direct or
inadvertent. Whilst the study of globalisation is considered a new field its origins
trace back to various thinkers. Karl Marx for example, who began to interpret
various structures as global patterns and possibilities rather than through the
lens of one sovereign state. This change has been continual and dynamic and is
primarily the result of social, economic and political changes that underlie
globalisation as a concept. More specifically, through deconstructing the video
message of Osama Bin Laden - an idea proposed by Manfred Steger - one gains a
deepened insight into globalisation. That is, in despite of the video being a
counter-systemic demonstration, Osama's message must, and does, borrow from
the various aspects of the world it so opposes - thereby deeming it a
performative contradiction. Its reliance on the modernity of communication
through technology and media outlets like Al Jazeera give it a global audience. In
actuality, Osama's very dress displays signs of hybridisation, and the brandishing
of a Kalashnikov further displays this irony. "...Even those voices that oppose
modernity cannot extricate themselves from the very process of globalisation
they so decry." (Juergensmayer, 2013)
