The attitude of science
Non-overlapping magisteria
• Stephen Jay Gould
• Science and religion represent different areas of inquiry (fact vs values) so there is a difference
between the nets over which they have a domain of teaching authority
• Domains DO NOT overlap
• They raise different questions
• Different spheres of knowledge
• Science = how?, faith = why?
• e.g. ithi agisteria of siee….do aies ause autis?
• e.g. ot ithi agisteria of siee…should hooseuals e alloed to arr?
Sources of knowledge
• Different ways of requiring knowledge
• Revelation e.g. instructed by parents to do/not do something
• Emotions, institutions, opinions
• Scientific method
o Often in conflict with opinions and revealed knowledge
o Nowadays not in conflict with opinions

"experts" in science
• Not only experts who provide correct info
• Tennis metaphor
o Tennis players = scientific theories
o Player managers = scientists
o Player ranking = current accumulated evidence for theory
o Need to compete = need for constant research and scepticism
o Player who never enters a tournament/refuses to recognise outcome but claims to be
the best = pseudoscience
o Spectator ignores outcomes but believes player is the best = credulous, close minded
