Social referencing: the coming together of social information gathering (baldwin & moses, 1996) When infants (~12 months) encounter a novel object they sometimes look towards a parent and sometimes subsequently respond to the object in accord with the affect displayed by the parent. The visual cliff (scorce, emde, campos and klinnert, 1985: infants look to their caregiver. Pre-requisites for social referencing: infant needs to be able to decode signal. Has to understand what the emotional expression means: infant must understand referential quality of information. Quality of information can be used later on if similar situation arises: infant must appreciate the potential for social communication of information. )t"s not about them interacting but they can use this communication to talk about different things: infant should have skills to elicit information.
