Topic 1 people are built for emotions: evolutionary and biological perspectives on emotion. The idea that we are genetically predisposed to have emotions and they serve a purpose. Emotion in infancy: adaptive, functional and regulatory functions. What is an emotion: how should we think about emotions in psychology: emotion has 3 components, cognitive (subjective conscious experience): how you subjectively feel when you are upset or happy. Quite difficult to measure as one thing that makes one person happy is different to another person. Very subjective and difficult to measure: physiological (bodily arousal): when we get anxious our heart rate increases, when we(cid:495)re happy our pupils dilate. Physical changes that happen when we experience certain emotions that we can measure quite well: behavioural (overt expression): when you are sad/angry expressions are indications of your feelings (frown/smile).
