Defence mechanisms
Unresolved conflicts (ego can't resolve conflict between id and superego) -> anxiety,
shame, guilt, embarrassment
-
Distorts id impulses into acceptable forms
○
Represses id impulses into unconscious
○
Id - wants to get rid of them
▪
Superego - getting rid of them/hurting them is wrong
▪
Ego - develops defence mechanisms e.g. repression
▪
e.g. if you dislike someone
○
Normal process we all experience
○
Ego develops defense mechanisms
•
To avoid pain of unresolved conflict
