Document Summary
Hysteria is not something of the past but we just use different labels and classifications for this symptom; the phenomenon is still the same; it is part of ptsd. Freud"s idea of hysteria was original in that it was psychological and not neurological. He thought hysteria was one particular kind of neurosis (the other was ocd) Ancient greeks believed hysteria was for women only because the disease was thought to be the result of a wandering womb . The traveling womb was thought to be responsible for an array of symptoms in various parts of the body such as the temporary paralysis of limbs or the dysfunction of sense organs. The presence of physical symptoms in the absence of physical pathology (disordered eating, swallowing, breathing; choking, loss of speech and sight, odd postures, etc) Uncontroversial compared to the other two conditions during this time.
