ANHB1102 Lecture 20: Ageing Notes
ANHB1102: Growth and Ageing 2 Notes
Ageing – starts at the point of conception
Senescence – point at which physiological system start to work less efficiently which eventually leads to
death
➢ Senescence at different time and rate for different people
➢ Skin – loses elasticity -> wrinkle
➢ Hair – fall our/lose pigmentation
➢ Posture – muscular atrophy, breakdown and weakening from effects of gravity
➢ Physical capacity decrease such as respiratory, cardiovascular, difficult to respond to physical
demands
➢ Reproductive capacity
- decrease due to menopause (lack of oocytes in ovary)
- decrease quality of sperms
- increase in 1960 and 1980 from 1900 is
due to advances in neonatal care
- Ages 60-70: change in mortality!!
- @ the instant you’re born, you have a
high mortality rate
- Weird increase during teenage years:
account for onset of puberty = drink driving etc
- 10 y/o is the lowest mortality rate
- 80 y/o decrease in rate of change of
mortality rate (once reach 80 = good set of
genes, likely to live on for another decade)

Document Summary
Ageing starts at the point of conception. Senescence point at which physiological system start to work less efficiently which eventually leads to death. Senescence at different time and rate for different people. Posture muscular atrophy, breakdown and weakening from effects of gravity. Physical capacity decrease such as respiratory, cardiovascular, difficult to respond to physical demands. Decrease due to menopause (lack of oocytes in ovary) Decrease quality of sperms increase in 1960 and 1980 from 1900 is. @ the instant you"re born, you have a due to advances in neonatal care high mortality rate account for onset of puberty = drink driving etc. 80 y/o decrease in rate of change of mortality rate (once reach 80 = good set of genes, likely to live on for another decade) Tendency to strive towards disorder from order = entropy. Disposable soma theory = passing on genes to another form.
