Human Ecology 1 Notes
Ecology = interaction
between population and
the environment it is
living in
Relationship means that individual in population
interact with something in the environment at some
point in their lifetime
- What are the things that increases/decreases
a orgais’s surial/fitess
- Biological: not just anat and phy, but how you
use that in every day interaction with environment
(behavior)
- Evolutionary: evolution of behavior and
morphology
- Cultural: just for humans:
- Basic requirement for life: needs
- Environment is hostile because it is changing:
conditions that organisms must deal with is different
from the conditions that they evolved from (eg. Climate
change)
- It has competitors: other organisms trying to get the
same thing you need
- Biggest competitor = those with similar needs
- Competing for resources

- Happens across generations
- A process/outcome from natural selection
- Some characteristics we have are related to
survival and reproductive success OR our
phylogenetic history, but not necessarily adaptive
to current environment
- Does’t ea that eer eistig trait is a
adaptation
- Since over generations: SLOW
- Result of competition
- Influenced by limiting resources
- The lowest availability of a resource that is
important = limited resource
- It is not changing the basic
phenotype
- Changes are often but not
always reversible
- Eg. Tanned skin
- Ability to do this is genetic, but
the change itself is not genetic
- Developmental plasticity: not
due to differences in genes but due
to genetic ability of organism to
change its developmental trajectory
due to the environment
characteristic it is staying in by
turning off/inhibiting certain
genes/DNA to be read and
transcribed
- Interaction between environment as it is a response
- to ~ are species wide: any human put in certain situation: will adapt
