Diabetes mellitus (dm) describes a group of metabolic disorders characterised by high blood glucose levels (hyperglycaemia). Dm can be classified into several forms, the main types are. Type 1, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. Global perspective of diabetes: worldwide, the prevalence of diabetes has been increasing in all regions of the world. In 2017, prevalence of 8. 8% with an estimated 425 million people (age 20 79 years) with diabetes worldwide: numbers expected to increase to 629 million by 2045. Diabetes is one of the top ten causes of death globally. In 2017, approximately 4 million deaths worldwide were attributable to diabetes in the 20 79 years age range. Sex distribution: overall, in the 20-79 year age group prevalence in men (9. 1%) is slightly higher than in women (8. 4%), age group 65-79 years have the highest diabetes prevalence for both men and women.
