LECTURE 1
INTRODUCTION AND APPLICATIONS
-Phonetics and Phonology
•Both are core foundations of language analysis
•Phonetics is about the physical nature of speech sounds
-Their production and physical properties
•Articulation - what we do with the human body
•Acoustic - physical properties of speech sounds in the air
•Perceptual - our human system of hearing and processing sounds is biased in varying
ways
•Phonology is about the way that languages use/organise these sounds to encode meaning
-(Simply) How differences in sound are used to differentiate words in a language
-How sounds are sequenced within words, etc.
-The universal perspective in Linguistics
•The discipline of Linguistics is predominantly universalist in a general sense:
-It is concerned with the nature of human language as a general phenomenon
•As derived from the study of individual languages
-And describes individual languages in terms of universal properties/processes/types/
tendencies…
-Applications
•Knowledge of phonetics and phonology is useful in many areas relating to:
-Language Analysis and Description
-First language acquisition
-Second language acquisition
