Stress and Illness:
3 views of stress:
- Stress as a stimulus (stressors)
- Stress as a response (stress reaction)
- Stress as an interaction between person and environment (stress mediators).
Acute stress: sudden, typically short-lived, threatening event (e.g. robbery, giving a speech).
Chronic stress: ongoing environmental demand (e.g. marital conflict, work stress, personality)
Catastrophes – unpredictable, large-scale, potentially life-threatening events
- Rates of psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression increase after catastrophes
Microstressors: daily irritations and annoyances including peak-hour traffic, housemates etc.
- Associated with burnout and heart disease
