PSYC3315 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Henry Molaison, Psychoactive Drug, Explicit Memory
Document Summary
People appear to lose specific surface information shortly after study- people retain gist- generalized abstracted info- people infer things they never heard or saw. Most of our ltm is devoted to things devoid of detail- but maintain the gist of the information. What happens to surface information- need to look for it differently. Repeated items show facilitation compared to new ones in tasks such as. Reduction of priming- hyperspecificity- shows that surface info (colour/font) is represented in memory. 2 things matter- conceptual gist match and perceptual surface match both gist and surface are represented. Attenuation of priming is evidence for the fact that the actual perceptual surface details are represented in memory. Demonstrated primarily in indirct tests of memory. But also some forms of explicit tests such as recognition involving images.
