Document Summary
Cognition: all processes by which sensory input is transformed, reduced, elaborated, stored, recovered & used, human info processing, mental illnesses often associated w/ cognitive deficits. Attention: enables cognitive processing to take place, selects info for processing. Focused attention: attend to small subset of info available to senses. Sex of speaker, voice intensity, speaker location etc: but we still process unattended info to a certain extent. Filter theories of attention: early filter theory, located early in the processing stream, only physical characteristics processed. Filter then determines which stimuli receive further processing. Dichotic learning task (1953: listened to 2 diff msgs in each ear, participants poor at receiving info. Didn"t notice lang / msg being played backwards etc. Physical changes detected: late filter theory, located late in processing stream, physical & semantic characteristics processed, filter then determines which stimuli gets attended to.
