PSYC3315 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Arson
Document Summary
Memory updating: memory representations should be stable, but also flexible. Lab experiment: variable unpredictable list lengths, recall last 3 items. Letter memory task: maintenance / refreshing of non-updated parts of a memory representation. Info substitution (active process ppl have control over) Discounting misinformation: media reports by their nature are piecemeal & inevitable require updating & discounting. Juries must disregard tainted evidence: but people don"t always discount misinformation. Misinformation: any info that is first presented as factual but then retracted / corrected. Even if not disseminated in order to mislead. Cie (continued influence effect: misinfo continues to influence understanding of & reasoning about an event after its retraction. Discounting possible in some situations: same warehouse story, same implied negligence, same correction, but followed by statement that arson materials were found, causal alternative provided >> people completely discounted original implied negligence, ppl don"t discount misinfo.
